Facts about Cataract and Robotic Cataract Surgery
A cataract is the clouding or Opacification of the lens inside the eye that prevents clear and sharp Vision, (just like fogging of your glasses or windscreen of the car due to moisture).
Common Symptoms of Cataract
It begins with Hazy or Blurred Vision other symptoms may include Halos around Light, issues related to Light sensitivity, Glare, difficulty while driving particularly during Night when light coming from car ahead causes glare, Frequent changes of Glasses.
Cataract Surgery
Often termed as Phacoemulsification which has been gold standard in treating cataracts. In this surgery a very small incision is made on the cornea and through that incision a Phaco probe which is almost shape of a Pen in inserted inside the Eye and uses Ultrasonic sound energy to break the cataractous lens and sucks it out, later an artificial IOL is implanted in the place of the previously placed lens. With the introduction of this latest technology cataract surgeries has become Faster and More Precise. Robotic Laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) is based on Platform using Femtosecond Laser which is aligned on the eye to be operarted 3D Images and dimensions of the are taken with the imaging system and . it appears on the screen snd computer attached with the system. The incision on the cornea (normally made by a thin blade), opening made on the capsule surface of the lens ( normally made by hand) and Fragmentation of the Nucleus (small pieces of the lens) are all done by the machine robotically within 30 Seconds.
Advantages-:
More Precise -: with the help of this Latest robotic cataract surgery technology (FLACS) and computer guided Laser delivery platform various surgical complications such as poor irregular incisions, irregular Rhexis, Runout Rhexis can be reduced to some extent along with certain degree of accuracy.Faster Recovery-:
This provides somewhat faster recovery to the patients ans can be a good option for cases seeking quick recovery post surgery.Faster surgery-:
As some of the major steps done with the hand are performed using Robotic system in less time it reduces overall surgical time. As the fragmentation is done by Laser system it reduces the consumption of Phaco energy leading to less inflammation.Perfect lens Placement and alignment
As the opening on the capsule surface is made using robotic platform it tends to be centered and perfect size which further leads to good centration of the IOL (artificial lens) in the bag.
Visual outcome-
Laser assisted system to some Extent can act on Cylindrical numbers and reduce them to a variable extent which is not possible by manual surgery.
Precautions after cataract surgery –
Avoid splashing of water on the face and going to swimming or overhead bath for at least 1 week after surgery
Avoid driving on day of the surgery and for a couple of days.
Try to prevent any accidental injury to the Eye.
It is recommended to avoid activities like lifting heavy objects and bending for a few weeks.
1. Not to rub the Eyes immediately after surgey
2. Avoid exposure to dust, water and pollutants for some a week atleast post surgery as it can increase chances of complications.
3. Use medications regularly post surgery as prescribed by the doctor.
